Mico sweep Intercol titles
The MICO University College proved for the second year in a row that they are the best in intercollegiate football as their male and female teams retained their titles on Friday.
In a repeat of last year's Division One finals matchup, the Vassell Reynolds-coached Mico men's team again beat G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport, 2-1 at University of Technology (UTech).
Victory gave Mico the double, as earlier in the season they had beaten UTech to capture the Greg Garrell knockout title.
In Friday's final, Mico took an early lead through a Kemar Ricketts goal in the third minute.
However, G.C. Foster pulled level in the 62nd minute through Darian James.
Then former Calabar High Manning Cup player, Shane Franklin, scored in the 79th minute to give Mico the lead again and this time they held it to secure the title.
The final was preceded by the Division Two championship game, which saw Knox Community College outscoring Moneague Community College 2-0 to capture the Division Two crown. Andrew Black (26th) and Aaron Anderson (58th) scored for Knox as both teams will be promoted to Division One next season.
Meanwhile, national senior player Tashana Vincent continued her fine scoring form this season in helping Mico's women's team land an emphatic 3-0 win over the University of West Indies (UWI) under lights in the female final at UWI Bowl, Mona.
Vincent, the competition's leading goalscorer, followed up her five-timer in the semi-finals the previous week against Northern Caribbean University with two goals in the final, as she scored in the 65th and 80th minutes. Timmoy Whyte had earlier given the Xavier Gilbert-coached Mico the lead in the 17th minute, as the Marescaux Road institution remained unbeaten for the second year in a row.
The match also produced a milestone for Mico's goalkeeper, Yolanda Robinson. For the second year in a row, the former St Jago High representative kept a clean sheet through the entire season.
