FOOTBALL: Winfried Schäfer wants more matches to prepare for 2018 World Cup
Head coach of Jamaica’s senior football team Winfried Schäfer wants training camps and matches to form the core of the country’s World Cup preparation.
The Reggae Boyz recently won the Caribbean Football Union Men's Caribbean Cup, with a penalty shoot-out win against Trinidad and Tobago in Montego Bay last month.
Schäfer says the country should use the Caribbean Cup triumph as a launch pad for the 2018 World Cup Finals, which will be held in Russia.
The German says the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has to invest in training camps and matches.
He says without training, the Reggae Boyz cannot win.
JFF president Captain Horace Burrell says the federation is prepared to support coach Schäfer and his training team to do whatever they want to qualify his team.
Schäfer says camps and friendly matches would facilitate establishing a core of players, provide in-competition practice, and give him sufficient time to build his players for World Cup assignments.
