Strong first-half powers Rivoli past Barbican

Rivoli United made light work of Red Stripe Premier League newcomers Barbican FC, who they easily defeated 2-0 yesterday at the Barbican playing field in St Andrew.

The opening goal came via the corner kick route, when Kevin Graham got on the receiving end of a free header and coolly finished in minute seven.

Captain Cory Burke, who has been in imperious form so far this season - with 10 goals - netted a brilliant solo effort in the 31st.

quick counter-attack

His strike came through a quick counter-attack, which left Barbican's defence dead in his wake. The striker bobbed and weaved around three defenders and tapped his shot coolly past the advancing Nicholas Campbell, for Rivoli's second.

The half-time score ended 2-0 and with the second stanza came the rains.

A wet and slippery surface changed the contest in favour of Barbican, but woeful finishing and poor control saw them miss point-blank chances.

Steve Green, formerly of Tivoli Gardens, supplied good passes and inspiration for the home boys, who just could not convert.

Shaquille 'Driver' Lewis

Youngster Shaquille 'Driver' Lewis, formerly of Norman Manley High, also posed a threat for Rivoli's defence with his pace and eye for goal. The youngster lacked support upfront and was unable to get on the scoresheet.

Rivoli's coach, Calvert Fitzgerald, commended his team's first-half showing.

"My guys did not train much in the festive season, but just came out and did enough to win today (yesterday)," he said.

Raymond Beckford, who was in his fourth game as coach of Barbican, is already looking forward to the transfer window.

"We gave it a good try despite not training enough in the holiday. Hopefully New Year we'll get some new players," Beckford added.
