Clarke is CTL tipsters’ champion
Orville 'Clarkie' Clarke (The Gleaner) has emerged winner of the 2014 CTL Tipsters' competition with 284 winners to capture the $130,000 prize donated by the promoting company, Caymanas Track Limited.
The veteran tipster, who has won many titles over the years, also won the Post to Post/Star tipsters' competition which appears at the back of the Track & Pools and Star newspaper to complete the double, a feat he previously achieved in 2004.
He beat arch-rival 'Johnny Handsome' and defending champion 'Indian Flame' (in a dead heat for second) by nine winners in the Post to Post competition for the $90,000 prize, thanks to eight winners including 9-1 chance OH MY GRANDPA on the final raceday, December 27.
'Clarkie' had 284 winners in both competitions, slamming closest rival Howard Abrahams (IRIE-FM) by 18 winners with Francisco 'Linky' Mills finishing third with 262 winners, each securing $30,000 and $20,000 respectively, in the CTL competition which appears in The Gleaner on the morning of each raceday. He raced into a commanding lead over Abrahams at the beginning of the last quarter for an impressive win.
Clarke thus won total prize money of $220,000 in addition to the $90,000 he picked up in monthly and bimonthly incentives earlier in the year.
Meanwhile, Tony Chadman (News Talk) spotted 56 winners to top the sixth and final bi-monthly period securing $20,000, while Track & Pools' Kirk Kong won the November/December wagering section with an impressive plus $4,617.12 ahead of Chadman, plus $1,519.32 and Cliff Williams (Power 106), plus $726.08.
For the second straight year, none of the 14 media tipsters was able to win the overall wagering category, all finishing in the red.
