Bayern extend H¯jbjerg's contract

Bayern Munich are giving Denmark defender Pierre-Emile H¯jbjerg a three-year contract extension and are sending him on loan to Bundesliga rival Augsburg for the rest of this season.

Bayern director of sport Matthias Sammer said yesterday that the Bundesliga champions will extend 19-year-old H¯jbjerg's contract until 2018 as a "clear sign that Bayern is counting on him in the future".

He says that loaning the player to Augsburg is a good way to give him more playing time before he returns to the club in July.

ATHENS, Greece (AP):

Defending Greek champions Olympiakos have signed former Porto coach Vitor Pereira, in a bid to reverse a string of disappointing league results.

The 46-year-old Portuguese, who comes from Saudia Arabia's Al-Ahli, has signed a two-and-a-half year contract, Olympiakos officials said yesterday.

Pereira replaces Spaniard Michel Gonzalez, who was sacked on Tuesday.

Two arrested in match-fixing probe

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP):

Police say a Cyprus court has ordered a former refereeing official into police custody for four days on suspicion that he tried to influence the outcome of lower-league matches as well as under-21 games.

Police spokesman Andreas Angelides said yesterday that the 56-year-old suspect was a member of the Cyprus Football Association's refereeing committee four years ago when the alleged offences occurred.

In a separate case, Angelides said another court will decide today whether to grant a police request to detain the head of Cyprus' Referee Association over allegations that the 54-year-old tried to influence the outcome of a first-division match two years ago.
