IT should be a carnival affair in the eastern end of the island tomorrow.

Track and field fans are expected to turn out in large numbers for the 28th staging of the Howard Jackson Relays at the Morant Bay High School playfield.

The event has in the past been very popular on the Jamaica Administrative Athletics Association (JAAA) calendar with top high schools across the island participating in over distance relays. However, most of the teams from outside the parish have not been to the meet for several years as the Central Hurdles and Relay meet is usually hosted. This latter event attracted most of the top schools.

Lack of sponsorship and the unavailability of the G.C. Foster College track have forced the organisers to cancel the Central Hurdles and Relays meet for the second year in a row and several top teams have opted to make the trip to Morant Bay.

St Jago High's and Vere Technical's girls will be there, and meet director Mackelia Ford is very excited.

"I am extremely happy that the girls from Vere and St Jago will be making a return to the meet, because these two teams have always competed well and they attract a big crowd, and so this year's staging will provide a lot of excitement for the fans," said Ford who added that the track is in excellent condition.

expected schools

Some of the other schools expected on tomorrow's programme are St George's College, St Andrew Technical, Bog Walk High, Camperdown High, Alpha High, Hydel High and St Hugh's High, while teams from the eastern area - Titchfield High, Happy Grove High, Seaforth High and host team Morant Bay High will parade their best athletes.

Relay events down for tomorrow are 4x150m, 4x300m, 4x600m and open medley (300x600x900x1200m). In addition to the relays, there will be 100 and 800m for all classes.

Olympian Hansle Parchment, a past student of Morant Bay High, will be a special guest at tomorrow's meet.
