Jamaica facing defeat
Defiant batting from Shivnarine Chanderpaul and another shoddy batting display by Jamaica Franchise put Guyana Jaguars in prime position to win their top-of-the-table four-day West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Professional Cricket League match at Sabina Park.
The 40-year-old Chanderpaul, playing in his 337th first-class match, scored his 129 half-century, a typically patient 77 off 184 balls as the Jaguars, resuming on 54 for four overnight, went on to post 202 in their second innings.
This gave them an overall lead of 339, and at stumps on yesterday's penultimate day, Jamaica, who scored 177 in their first innings, were reeling at 105 for six, 234 runs in arrears, with four wickets in hand.
The Guyanese had Chanderpaul - who was last man out caught behind after farming the batting - to thank for their impressive position, with only two other batsmen passing 20 in their second innings. Leon Johnson made 33 and all-rounder Chris Barnwell 28.
three for 51
Jamaica's bowling was led by young seamer, Marquino Mindley, who ended with three for 51. There were two wickets each for Damion Jacobs, fellow leg-spinner Odean Brown, and all-rounder David Bernard Jr.
Set a daunting total, Jamaica struggled from the get-go, and with only 17 runs on the board, were three wickets down.
Opener John Campbell was the first to go when he was caught at point playing a cut shot for eight; followed by Nkrumah Bonner, leg before wicket off the bowling of pacer Keon Joseph for one; and Jermaine Blackwood, caught at cover, also off the bowling of Joseph, for seven.
Captain Tamar Lambert and Horace Miller then staged a brief recovery with a 33-run fourth-wicket stand before Miller was caught for seven.
Lambert was caught off the bowling of leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo for 29, while Carlton Baugh Jr, after facing four deliveries, was adjudged leg before wicket. Jacobs, 24 not out and Bernard Jr, 16 not out, will resume batting today when play resumes at 10 a.m.
The impressive Joseph, bowling at good pace, took two for 20.
