Girls to give sneak preview at Central Champs
The five top girls high school track and field teams will be in action at the three-day Digicel Central Championships, which will get under way at Vere Technical this afternoon, starting at 1 p.m.
The opening day will have two track events, the 2,000 metres Steeplechase Open for both boys and girls, plus competition in all the throwing events.
Following competition at Vere Technical, action will switch to Kirkvine Sports Club tomorrow and Wednesday, where the vertical and horizontal jumps and the remaining track events will take place.
The event is expected to provide an indication of results at the upcoming Girls' Champs, which is expected to be very close.
Top teams Edwin Allen High, St Jago High, Vere Technical, Holmwood Technical, and Hydel High are down to compete, but the coaches from these teams are expected to be very cautious, with the prestigious Gibson McCook Relays to be held three days after the meet.
Today's opening day will see athletes participating in the boys' discus, Under-19 and Under-17, and Under-19 and Under-16 girls vying for spots at next month's Digicel Grand Prix Athletics Series final at the G.C. Foster Classic.
This is the final meet of the series before the grand finale, where the top two athletes from this championships in the selected events will join the top two from Western Championships and the top four from the Corporate Area (Kingston and St Andrew) to compete in the individual finals. There is also a top prize of $1 million worth of gym equipment for their institution that tops the series, while the winning coaches from these teams will be awarded with $50,000, and the top three athletes in the finals will walk away with Digicel handsets.
