JBA to host top level tourney at UTech

The first-ever Jamaica International Badminton Championships will be held on March 19-22 at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium, University of Technology.

Top level badminton players from around the world have been invited to the four-day event. The tournament promises to deliver non-stop competition in men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. Players will battle for US$5,000 and other prizes.

The Jamaica International Badminton Championships 2015 has been sanctioned by the world governing body, Badminton World Federation (BWF) as a Level 4 International Series Event. Participants will be awarded qualifying points for the World Championships and 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Overseas competitors will originate from 14 countries including Suriname, Turkey, Austria, United States, Latvia, Congo, Guatemala and Dominica Republic with the highest ranked competitor being men's singles player Howard Shu of the USA. Shu is currently ranked 56th in the world.

The local squad, led by Jamaica Badminton Association (JBA) technical director, Howard Ranger and Neil Anthony, head coach for the senior team, will be the largest in the competition.
