Three J'cans in WI 14-man squad
Jamaicans Marlon Samuels, Jerome Taylor and Jermaine Blackwood have been included in a West Indies 14-man squad for the first Test against England which bowls off on Monday.
All-rounder Samuels and fast bowler Taylor were members of the West Indies squad which reached the quarter-finals of the recent ICC World Cup in New Zealand and Australia.
Barbadian Shai Hope is the only newcomer to the squad while Devendra Bishoo of Guyana is back after losing his place in 2012. Bishoo had a strong season with the Guyana Jaguars in the recent West Indies Professional Cricket League (PCL)
Hope, 21, was one of the leading batsmen for Barbados Pride in the recently concluded PCL. He made the tournament's highest score of 211 against the Windward Islands Volcanoes for a total aggregate of 688 runs in nine matches.
STRONGCOMPETITION FOR PLACES
Commenting on the squad which was released by the West Indies Cricket Board yesterday, convenor of selectors Clive Lloyd said it was great to see there were a number of players contending for a place in the squad.
"It is always good when there is strong competition for places," he said. "A few players have been rewarded for the work which they have done, like Shai Hope, Carlos Brathwaite and Devendra Bishoo, but it will take some time to reach the standard of consistency that we all desire to see from our side.
The first Test will be played at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in Antigua.
Squad: Denesh Ramdin (captain), Kraigg Brathwaite (vice-captain), Sulieman Benn, Devendra Bishoo, Jermaine Blackwood, Carlos Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Kemar Roach, Marlon Samuels, Devon Smith and Jerome Taylor.
