Penn Relays: Holmwood Technical are Girl's 4x800m champions
Holmwood Technical gave the Jamaican team its first success in the relays today as the girls captured their ninth title after clocking 9:01.01 to win the Championships of America High School event.
Western Branch out of Virginia was second in 9:07.71 while Vere Technical finished third in 9:13.06.
Coming into the final as the fourth fastest qualifier, Holmwood brought in top athlete, Lisa Buchanan into the final and it paid big dividends as she ran the fastest split, 2:10.87 to pull away from their two main rivals for a convincing win.
Buchanan was very happy after her team's success. “Although the condition was not that good I knew I had to do my best for the team as they were all depending on me on the final leg and I wanted them along with the school and the entire Jamaica to be proud", said Buchanan.
Coach Dave Anderson was not surprised by his team's win." All season the Girls have been doing well on the road and they have been the most outstanding team in the event so far and I expected it. The weather was not a factor for us today as we trained in similar condition in Christiana", said Anderson.
The other members of the team were Shanieke Watson, Chrisanna May and Brittney Campbell.
