Newnham shoots 65 at golf trials

Jonathan Newnham was on fire yesterday on the opening day of the National Trials to select Jamaica's team to the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships which will be played here next month.

Newnham, who topped the men's category at the recent National Amateur Golf Championships, shot an impressive 65 on the challenging Cinnamon Hill golf course and carded eight birdies and one bogey to make up his final score. The golf course was described as being in excellent condition and the round was completed under overcast conditions with very little wind. William Knibbs is six shots behind on 71, while Sean Morris finished the day with a 72.

Greg Chong took the early lead in the Senior group with 76, followed by Robert Chin, who shot 79 and Radcliff Knibbs and Richard White, who both ended the day on 80 strokes.

Jamaica Golf Association president, Peter Chin, shot three over par 75, to take the lead in the Super Senior Category. Bert Tomlinson is currently second with 79 while Dennis Atkinson is third on 80.

Tiana Crus produced a first day score of 76 to share the lead with Jodi Barrow among the women. One shot behind is Canadian-based Mandy Piccininni. Sherisse Walker and Crystal Gayle are next with 80.

The trials continue today at 7:30 a.m.
