Birmingham Diamond League: McPherson proves her class, wins 400m
Stephanie McPherson confirmed her penchant for running in the United Kingdom, when she won the 400m at the Birmingham Diamond league meeting today.
McPherson, who won gold at the same distance at last year’s Commonwealth Games, clocked a time of 52.14 seconds to lead home Brazilian Aparecida Coutinho (52.59) and Anyika Onuora from Great Britain (52.75).
McPherson’s compatriot Christine Day came in fifth in a time of 53.24.
A delighted McPherson said: “Before I got out there I was feeling a little cramp, but I still had a good race, apart from the wind, however, the race was OK. I have enjoyed the crowd in Birmingham, even if it has been a bit cold.
“The World Championships in Beijing are my main aim, I want to get in among the Americans and compete.”
