Jamaica's top 78 junior shooters will seek to take centre stage in their respective categories at the NCB Capital Markets Junior Sporting Clays Nationals, at the Jamaica Skeet Club in Portmore, St Catherine, today.

Registration begins at 8:45 a.m. and opening ceremony at 9:45 a.m., followed by a 10:30 a.m. shotgun start.

Defending champion Nicholas Chen could go three wins from five competitions overall but he will have to stave off challenges from Chad Ziadie, Brandon Reid, Rueben Mair, Aiden Ingledew and Nicholai Clarke.

"I've been practicing a lot over the last couple weeks," he said, despite examinations. "The competition will be stiff, noted the former captain of Hillel Academy, while adding "I am mentally ready, physically I hope so."

Chen told The Sunday Gleaner last Friday that he "enjoys NCB shoot, the targets are always very well set".

hoping for best result

"I put my all into this shoot, and I hope the best result comes (today)," he added.

Today's fifth renewal could well be their biggest and best, with a total of 13 shooting stations, and intense competition among Juniors A, B and C; Sub-Junior A and B; Girls A and B and Beginners classes.

In the beginners category, there will be a 50 round shoot off, while the others will shoot 100 rounds.

The top six shooters will then qualify for the super six round, and shoot an additional 25 rounds with the highest super six score guaranteeing the overall trophy winner.

"This is the biggest junior tournament we have had to date. We have more than 80 invitees and I am expecting in the mid seventies to shoot," said president of the National Skeet Club Khaleel Azan from the range on Friday.

Event sponsors include: NCB Capital Markets, Reggae Jammins, Tru-Juice, Wata and Ranger Security.
