JAMAICA vs BARBADOS NETBALL SERIES: Easy win for Sunshine Girls
Jamaica's Sunshine Girls made light work of Barbados Gems to claim an easy 52-22 win and take a 1-0 lead after game one of their three-game series at the National Indoor Sports Centre Friday night.
The Sunshine Girls pressured their regional opponents throughout the contest to take a comfortable 30-goal win.
The Sunshine Girls and their New Zealand-based goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid in particular, started shakily but the Barbadians were still no match as the hosts went on to take a 12-5 lead after the first quarter.
Fowler-Reid was again bit off with her shooting in the second quarter but Jamaica still outscored Barbados 15-4 to lead by 18 goals (27-9) at half-time.
The towering shooter found her best form and confidence and in the second half and was unstoppable as she hit shots from all parts of the circle. The Jamaicans won the third quarter 10-7 to lead 37-16 going into the final period of the game.
Fowler-Reid, who was recently named most valuable player for the New Zealand conference of the ANZ League ended the game in complete contrast to how she started it as the Jamaicans won the quarter 15-6. She ended the game with 35 goals from 52 attempts. Support came from Shanice Beckford with 12 from 16 and Anna Kaye Griffths, five from nine.
