Calabar's Michael O'Hara.

Twenty-eight finals, 15 on the track and 13 in the field, will be contested on today's opening day of the two-day Supreme Ventures Limited JAAA National Junior Championships at the National Stadium.

The island's Under-18 and 20 athletes are seeking spots on the national team to the World Youth Championships in Cali, Columbia between July 15-19 and the Junior Pan-Am Championships scheduled for Edmonton, Canada, July 31-August 2.

As usual the 100 metres will take centre stage on the opening day with the girls' Under-18 set for 5:05 p.m. In this event, the St Jago High duo of Shaniel English and Kimone Shaw will square off with the outstanding Shellece Clarke of Edwin Allen High. Shaw has shown the best recent form as she clocked 11.52 seconds to win the youth 100m at the JAAA All Comers meet.

St Jago's athletes should also figure well in the Under-20 girls event which is scheduled for 5:10 p.m. Natalliah Whyte is the favourite ahead of teammate Shanice Reid.

Calabar should dominate among the boys. In the Under-18 Tyreke Wilson and Dejour Russell should fight out the finish while the impressive Michael O'Hara looks a cinch for the Under-20 title.
