WINNIPEG, Manitoba (CMC):

Jamaican jockey Dane Nelson shone at Assiniboia Downs on Sunday, capturing the feature CDN$25,000 Free Press Stakes as part of a triple to dominate the nine-race card.

Going six furlongs for the three-year-olds and upward in Race Six, Nelson partnered with Zdeno to take the feature event by two lengths in a time of one minute, 11 seconds.

Installed at odds of 2-1, Nelson tracked with the four-year-old gelding from second, as pacesetter Storm Chance carved out fractions of 23 seconds and 45.80 seconds to lead by two lengths at the half-mile.

no challenge

Nelson made his bid on the late turn, rushing Zdeno up along the rails to emerge as the leader in the stretch, and reach the wire with Storm Chance offering no comeback challenge.

The victory was one of three for Nelson who also took race two with favourite Bluesie Brown and race three with another favourite, Boneafide Cat.

In Race Two over seven furlongs, Nelson combined with the five-year-old bay mare to trounce the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares, after tracking early on and then producing a late burst in the stretch.

Going five furlongs in Race Three, meanwhile, Nelson made all the running aboard Boneafide Cat to beat the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares who have won only their maiden.

The pair disputed the lead with Bold Humour through the half-mile before getting clear in the stretch to reach the wire a whopping seven lengths clear.
