Geoffrey Maxwell back at Hydel
Former national senior men's team football coach Geoffrey Maxwell will be back at Hydel High for the 2015 Manning Cup schoolboy season.
Maxwell is the technical director, while Donovan 'DV' Hayles will continue as coach. The veteran football tactician coached Hydel to the Manning Cup final in 2012 then parted ways with the institution a year later. He was replaced by Hayles last year.
Now, both coaches will work together next season.
Corey Bennett, Hydel Group of Schools vice-president and sports director, confirmed that Maxwell is back at the Ferry-based institution.
"Yes, Maxwell is back," Bennett told The Gleaner yesterday. "The deal was done a week ago, and he (Maxwell) will be working as technical director alongside coach Donovan Hayles," Bennett added.
Hydel started in the Manning Cup in 2010 and failed to make the second stage that year. However, since then, they have advanced beyond the group stage and were beaten in the 2012 final by St George's College.
"The aim is to once again be competitive and advance from the group stage and take it from there," he said.
Bennett is pleased with the school's progress.
"Most definitely, I am pleased with the progress in the Manning Cup. I think we have done well by going to the final in 2012,' Bennett added.
Hydel will compete in next season's Group B alongside Haile Selassie, Greater Portmore, Dunoon, Papine, and Cumberland.
The 2015 Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association/ LIME Manning Cup season is set to kick off in September.
Maxwell also coached his alma mater, Excelsior, to the Manning and Walker Cup titles in 1980. He guided Excelsior to the Walker Cup in 1979.
He has also coached at the senior club level at Santos, Harbour View, Arnett Gardens, Waterhouse, JDF, Maverley/ Hughenden, St George's United, and Humble Lion.
