ATHLETICS: High jump champion Shkolina out of Worlds with injury
World high jump champion Svetlana Shkolina of Russia will be unable to defend her title in Beijing due to an Achilles tendon tear.
Shkolina injured herself while competing at the Russian national championships yesterday and will be out for several months, missing the World Championships which starts August 22.
Shkolina's coach Sergei Klyugin says she will undergo an operation in the coming days and will definitely be out until the winter.
The 29 year old Shkolina won the World title in Moscow two years ago with a jump of two metres, three centimetres.
This matched her personal best set on her way to winning bronze at the 2012 Olympics.
