ARIMA, Trinidad (CMC):

Successful jockey Nobel Abrego added a fifth Trinidad Derby Stakes to his long list of achievements when he steered War Maker to victory in the US$78,741 feature event at Santa Rosa Park here Thursday.

Going off at odds of 6-1, the pair completed the 2,000-metre trip in a time of two minutes, 09.3 seconds, reaching the wire 6-3/4 lengths, to give renowned trainer John O'Brien his sixth derby win.

Charismatic Groom, going off at 5-1 with United States-based Panamanian jockey Elvis Trujillo aboard, finished second, while 50-1 longshot Morning Calm with Nela Mohammed in the saddle finished third.

Jamaican entrant, Kronus (Shane Ellis aboard), the odds-on bet, finished fourth.

Barbadian entrant Poetic License, with the Canada-based Rico Walcott in the stirrups, led through the first quarter run in 23.4 seconds, with Bergeron Boy tracking from second and Star Sapphire stalking from third.

Abrego positioned War Maker in fourth but at the 700-metre pole on the backstretch, sent the chestnut colt to the front as the pace quickened.

Exiting the far turn, War Maker was three lengths clear of Bergeron Boy with Charismatic Groom trying to stay in contention in third.

In the stretch, Charismatic Groom came to challenge, reducing War Maker's lead to a length but Abrego pulled the best out of the three-year-old and he romped to the finish impressively.

Abrego also added to his tally when he captured the $150,000 Diamond Stakes with favourite Bigman In Town.
