Western Bureau:

St Elizabeth Technical clipped ISSA-FLOW daCosta Cup Group E rivals Munro College 3-2 yesterday in Santa Cruz to remain a point behind leaders Lacovia High in the race for top spot in what is now being labelled the 'group of death'.

Lacovia tagged BB Coke High 3-1 to move to 16 points, with STETHS holding second place on 15. Munro, who entered the game as group leaders, slipped to third on 13 points, with BB Coke (11) and Maggotty (9).

STETHS are yet to drop points at home, but are inconsistent on the road.

today we showed grit

Coach Omar Wedderburn welcomed yesterday's victory.

"We are always going to have bad patches, but, today, we showed grit against this good Munro side," Wedderburn said.

"They came back at us, but we held on for the win and that in itself is an important part of the game. The ability of the players to hold their nerves against strong opposition speaks volumes of their mental strength," he added.

But with two rounds of matches left in group play, STETHS cannot afford to drop any further points if they are to advance as group winners. Elsewhere in that group, Maggotty High defeated Newell 2-0.

Meanwhile, the unbeaten Manchester wrapped up yet another win in Group F with a comprehensive 5-0 demolition of Mile Gully. Now with 24 points, Manchester have qualified to the next round.

Two former winners also locked up their spots in the next round. Rusea's drubbed Merlene Ottey 6-0 in Group B, while Cornwall College made their way with a 2-2 draw with St James High in Group A.

Calwayne Allen opened the scoring for St James in the 35th minute only for Leonard Murray to fire in a 48th-minute equaliser. Peter-Lee Vassell then sent Cornwall College in front with a 52nd-minute penalty.

But hardworking St James midfielder Akeen Campbell scored in the 75th minute to give his team a deserved share of the points, which keeps them second in the group.

Over in Group K, already qualified Dinthill Technical drew 2-2 with Bog Walk High to move to 20 points.
