On Wednesday Arsenal recorded one of their best recent results in Europe when, having needing to win 2-0 in Greece against Olympiacos, they won 3-0 thanks to an Olivier Giroud hat-trick. It means the Gunners are in the knock-out stages of the Champions League for the 16th year in a row.
Now the bottom club in the Barclays Premier League entertains Arsenal, second in the table after returning to winning ways against Sunderland. The Gunners had gone three games without a win but responded by claiming their ninth victory of the season, the joint most wins along with Leicester City and Manchester City.
By contrast, Aston Villa have just one win - the fewest in the Premier League. But in new manager Remi Garde they have a man familiar to Arsenal fans. The Frenchman spent three years at Arsenal, from 1996 to 1999, though in that time he made only 31 first-team appearances.
Arsenal have scored 27 goals so far; only Everton (28), Manchester City (30) and Leicester City (32) have more. But they have also hit the woodwork 12 times, more than any other team in the Premier League. Villa, though, have just 13 goals, the joint lowest with Stoke City.
