Newly appointed Jamaica Scorpions one-day captain, opener John Campbell, says his intention is to grab the opportunity with both hands.

The former West Indies Under-19 vice-captain is scheduled to lead Jamaica for the first time when the WICB NAGICO Insurance Super50 tournament bowls off early next month.

"I'm really happy and elated to be leading my country at the highest level," said Campbell, who replaces spinner Nikita Miller as leader of the unit.

"It's not really a surprise to me as I am the vice-captain of the four-day team.

"I therefore knew that the selectors were looking at me, and now that I have been presented with the opportunity, I hope to grab it both hands."

Campbell, one of the brighter batting prospects locally, is set to lead Jamaica in a tough Group A.

The group includes the co-hosts and title holders, Trinidad and Tobago Red Force, last year's runners-up Barbados Pride, and invited team, ICC Americas.

Each team is slated to play each other twice at the group stage with the top two advancing to the semi-finals, set for January 20 and 21.

The final will be played on Sunday, January 23.

"It's a tough tournament and a tough group, but we have a good, balanced squad," stated Campbell.

"I am therefore looking forward to us going over there and representing the country well, and hopefully bring home the trophy."

Meanwhile, 23-year-old Campbell, who boasts a one-day average of 33 from eight games, said he is hoping to improve his overall statistics.

"I have been doing fairly well in one-day cricket, and heading into this tournament, I am looking to score my first one-day century," he said.

"That would be good for me, and for the team."

The third staging of the Super50 is set to bowl off on Thursday, January 7 at Queen's Park Oval with the Scorpions facing the Red Force in a day-night encounter.

St Kitts and Nevis are the other co-hosts and will feature Guyana Jaguars, Windward Islands Volcanoes, Leeward Islands Hurricanes, and Combined Campuses and Colleges Marooners.
