FOOTBALL: Messi wins Ballon d'Or over Ronaldo and Neymar

Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d'Or award for the world's best player for the fifth time today.

The 28-year-old Messi had 41 per cent of the votes organised by soccer's governing body FIFA.

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo finishing second with 27 per cent and Barcelona's striker Neymar third with seven percent. 

Either Messi or Ronaldo, who became a three-time winner last year, have won the past eight awards. Messi scored 52 and dished out 26 assists in 62 goals for Barcelona last season. 

Ronaldo scored 57 goals including a record 16 in the Champions League last season for Real Madrid.  

Meanwhile, United States' midfielder Carli Lloyd, who scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final, won the women's award.
