Long Running Train scores impressive win
The Harry Parsard-owned and trained American filly LONG RUNNING TRAIN showed just how much she had improved with a decisive victory in the 3-y-o and up open allowance mile at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Installed a 6-5 favourite with former champion Wesley 'Callaloo' Henry aboard, LONG RUNNING TRAIN rebounded from her fighting second to top-distance horse PERFECT NEIGHBOUR in the grade one Harry Jackson Memorial Cup over 2400m on Boxing Day to beat old rival and 7-5 chance CAMPESINO by 1-3/4 lengths in a field of 10.
Never far off the pace as the outsider RAGING PROSPECT led from up-in-class hat-trick seeker DIFERENTGENERATION and highly fancied ALL CORRECT, LONG RUNNINGTRAIN disposed of the leaders on entering the straight to hold the apprentice-ridden CAMPESINO at bay from below the distance.
INSUFFICIENT LIFETIME EARNINGS
LONG RUNNING TRAIN was notching a third win from her last five starts and her fifth from 11 starts lifetime with total stakes of $2.7 million. While happy with the win, Parsard had one lingering regret:
"I was really disappointed that she failed to get into the rich Diamond Mile early last month due to insufficient lifetime earnings, and her performance in her two races since has shown me that she would have impacted on the outcome in the $13.5 million race. That's why I am insisting that the format be changed to an invitational race this year," said the veteran trainer who won a number of grade one trophy races with UPPA TUNE, POCHEEN and St Leger winner SUPERLUMINAL last season.
Meanwhile, BRAWN, running as the 3-2 favourite with Aaron Chatrie riding for trainer Gary Subratie and owner Michros, closed rapidly in deep stretch to win the Allan 'Billy' Williams Memorial Trophy overnight allowance race at 1400 metres. And the Philip Feanny-trained DANCING QUEEN (2-1) with Ian Spence aboard and 3-5 favourite POISON GAS with Omar Walker riding for trainer Philip Elliott won the respective sections of the Eight Thirty Sprint over the straight for native-bred maiden 3-y-o fillies.
