A new champion will be crowned this Saturday when the final of the JN Open League netball competition is contested at the Leila Robinson Courts, as defending champions Mico 'B' were beaten 20-17 by in-form Molynes United 'A' in their quarter-final encounter on Tuesday.

The winners booked a spot in today's semi-finals, where they will face Mico 'A' at 7:15 p.m. Other winners UWI Pelicans 'A' and Waulgrovians 'A' will also play for a spot in the final, beginning at 6:45 p.m.

Molynes United 'A', rated second in attack and defence, started off on fire and raced to a 7-0 lead as goalshooter Shantal Slater was bang on target, with goalkeeper Kadian Dehaney making it hard for the Mico 'B' shooters at the other end.

MISSED CHANCE

Molynes 'A' finished with a 9-1 first-quarter lead, but Mico fought back gallantly to tie the score at 9-9. They got opportunities to take the lead, but two missed attempts by Daniel Masters and Shauna Jones let the chance slip.

Their opponents capitalised to lead 14-10 at half-time and the Roy Price-coached team kept their title ambitions on track, as they will face another Mico team, which had an easy 28-17 win over Cablepro.

Despite the absence of ace goalshooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid, who jetted off to New Zealand for the ANZ Championships, the Annette Daley-coached Mico 'A' remained unbeaten in this season with a fine all-round display. They led 8-4, 17-15 and 23-13, respectively, at the end of the first three quarters.

Goalshooter Taniele Roberts, who took Fowler-Reid's position, scored 27 goals from 38 attempts, while Petal Smith top-scored for Cablepro with nine goals from 15 tries.

There was no luck for Cablepro's sister team, Jamalco.

After a big setback, which saw ace goalshooter Marsha Murphy having to leave the game early in the first quarter after twisting her knee, the Winston Nevers-coached Jamalco lost by two goals, as UWI scored a 25-23 win to book their semi-final place.

SMOOTH SAILING

Another former many-time champion, Walgrovians 'A', also booked their semi-final spot, but in a one-sided affair, as they turned back Police 'A' 32-16.

Having racked up a big 10-1 first-quarter lead, it was smooth sailing for the rest of the way as Waulgrovians 'A' led 16-6 after the second quarter and 24-10 at the end of the third stanza, before cruising the rest of the way to set up a clash with UWI 'A' in today's semi-final.

The matches will be preceded by the Open League 'B' Group semis, with Speg 'A' vs Molynes United 'B' at 5:45 p.m., followed by Tivoli Gardens vs UTech Knights at 6:15 p.m.
