Former Olympian Herb McKenley was one of the most prominent sportsmen to run for a seat in the House of Parliament. In 1972, he contested the St Andrew Northern constituency for the Jamaica Labour Party against the People's National Party's Allan St Aubyn Isaacs and Cecil A. Nelson of the Christian Democratic Party. Isaacs won with 10,610 votes, while McKenley got 2,822 votes. Nelson secured 49 ballots.
