CRICKET: Excelsior wins Grace Shield for the first time in 53 years
Excelsior are the urban area ISSA/GraceKennedy Shield winners for the first time in 53 years after defeating Eltham High by massive 220 runs in the final at the Melbourne Oval in Kingston earlier today.
Resuming on 58 for three in their second innings on today's third and final day, Eltham were dismissed for 90 runs.
National Under-19 batsman Ramone Francis top scored for Eltham with 27 runs before he was stumped off the bowling of Rushawn Riley.
Leading the bowling for Excelsior was national under 17 representative Raewin Senior who bagged six wickets for 34 runs for a match haul of 12 for 60.
Senior was supported by Riley who picked up three for 13.
Coach Kirland Bailey was extremely happy for the win.
When Excelsior made the Grace Shield final in 1996 Chris Gayle was the team captain.
However, the team lost to Kingston College.
Final scores in the game: Eltham High 96 runs in the first innings and 90 in the second; Excelsior 228 and 178 all out.
