Sergio Aguero scored a hat-trick as Manchester City moved closer to securing Champions League football next season against 10-man Chelsea. Kevin De Bruyne fed Aguero, who fired in for the first. Samir Nasri put Aguero clear to finish smartly for the second before Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois was sent off for fouling Fernandinho, allowing Aguero to slam home his third from the spot.

Southampton's hopes of a European spot suffered a setback as they were held to a draw at Everton. The visitors went close when a Shane Long header and a Dusan Tadic left-foot shot came off the woodwork. However, centre-back Ramiro Funes Mori gave the home side the lead against the run of play with a deflected shot off Ryan Bertrand. Southampton equalised through Sadio Mane.

Aston Villa were relegated to English football's second tier for the first time since 1987 after this defeat at Manchester United. Marcus Rashford scored the only goal, sweeping Antonio Valencia's pass. Villa were second best for much of the game, although Rudy Gestede's volley did hit a post late on. It was a ninth straight loss for the visitors and left them 15 points from safety.

Newcastle claimed a first win under Rafael Benitez as they overcame Swansea to bolster their chances of Barclays Premier League survival. Jamaal Lascelles headed to put Newcastle ahead. Ashley Williams and Jefferson Montero missed chances as the Swans dominated after the break, but Moussa Sissoko and Andros Townsend struck late goals.

Sunderland climbed to within a point of safety by beating relegation rivals Norwich. Fabio Borini converted a penalty following Andre Wisdom's challenge. Jermain Defoe turned in a second after the break before Duncan Watmore scored a third in injury time. Nathan Redmond hit a post and Norwich had penalty appeals turned down.

Saido Berahino missed two second-half penalties as Watford hung on for a narrow win at The Hawthorns. Heurelho Gomes saved both penalties from Berahino, in the 67th and 87th minutes. Ben Watson got the FA Cup semi-finalists' winner, volleying home a near-post corner in the first half. The result moves Watford above West Brom into 12th on 41 points, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

ARSENAL 1 CRYSTAL PALACE 1
Yannick Bolasie struck late for Crystal Palace to secure a draw. Arsenal should have won comfortably but are now fourth in the Barclays Premier League. Alexis Sanchez headed in Danny Welbeck's chip to give the Gunners the lead but they lacked a killer instinct to put the result beyond doubt. Bolasie then struck from distance, beating Petr Cech at his near post.

LEICESTER CITY 2 WEST HAM UNITED 2
Leonardo Ulloa's injury-time penalty rescued a point for Leicester in a controversial encounter with West Ham as the Foxes went eight points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League. Jamie Vardy gave Leicester the lead but was sent off for a second yellow card. Andy Carroll levelled rom the penalty spot and Aaron Cresswell netted two minutes later. But Leicester won a penalty in added time and Ulloa stole a point in the fifth minute of added time.

AFC BOURNEMOUTH 1 LIVERPOOL 2
Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge earned Liverpool a win at Bournemouth. The result lifts Liverpool up to eighth place in the Barclays Premier League table, while the Cherries remain 13th. Top scorer Firmino opened the scoring from a rebound after Artur Boruc had saved Sturridge's backheel, before the England striker headed in Ibe's free-kick just before half-time. Josh King replied in added time.
