Windies humbled by Aussies in Tri-Series contest

West Indies were let down by a typically weak batting effort and crashed to a six-wicket defeat to Australia in their second day and night game of the Tri-Nations Series yesterday.

Sent in at the Guyana National Stadium, the Windies tumbled to 116 all out off 32.3 overs and the reigning World champions easily chased down the paltry target to achieve victory in the 26th over.

West Indies had recovered from the early loss of Andre Fletcher to reach 50 for one, but leg-spinner Adam Zampa (3-16) and off-spinner Nathan Lyon (3-39) then ran through the middle and lower order as the last nine wickets perished for a mere 66 runs.

Opener Johnson Charles top-scored with 22 and Carlos Brathwaite, batting at number seven, made 21, but they were the only two to pass 20.

In reply, Australia were carried by left-handed opener David Warner, who stroked a run-a-ball, unbeaten 55 with three fours and a six, while Usman Khawaja chipped in with 27.

Off-spinner Sunil Narine, who finished with two for 36, grabbed two wickets in the space of four deliveries in the 20th over to trigger a slight wobble, but the Aussies were never in danger of squandering the win.

They will now face South Africa in their second game tomorrow before the series heads to Warner Park in St Kitts for the second leg.

The Windies were hunting their second victory in three days following their opening success against South Africa on Friday.
