Russell blow at trials

Published:Thursday | June 30, 2016 | 6:33 PM

Leading Jamaican Janieve Russell did not show up for her women's 400m hurdles heat at the JAAA/Supreme Ventures National Senior Championships inside the National Stadium.

Russell, who has impressed all season was easily expected to book her spot to the 2016 Rio Olympics after a season and personal best time of 53.96, which also makes her the second fastest woman in the world this year, was set to face the starter in the first of three heats in the event.

It is a major blow to the World Championships finalist, who was coming off a leg surgery at the back end of last season. There is no confirmation as to the reasons behind Russell's no-show.

The JAAA selection policy does allow for athletes, who miss trials due to injury, to be selected for competition if a medical waiver is secured.
