Western Bureau:

Approximately 800 participants are expected to turn out for the eighth staging of the Committee for the Upliftment of the Mentally Ill (CUMI) - Come Run 10K and 5K Run/Walk, set for the grounds of the Tryall Club in Hanover on September 24.

The disclosure was made at yesterday's press launch at the Deja All-Inclusive Resort in Montego Bay, where the organisers also noted their intention to raise approximately $4 million from the event to help shore-up the CUMI Trust Fund that supports the rehabilitation of the mentally ill in and around St. James.

"We made a significant amount last year to the tune of about $4 million and we intend to match that amount this year," said Nurse Joy Crooks, CUMI's chief administrator.

The 25-year-old organisation is solely dependent on community outreach in gaining traction in its efforts to help the homeless and those mentally challenged on the streets of Montego Bay.

The run/walk is CUMI's main fund raising event, with each succeeding year bringing in more participation. However, due to logistics, the organisers have capped this year's race at 800 entrants.

Sponsors of this year's event include the Tryall Club, Wysinco, Sandals Foundation, Fontana Pharmacy, the Caribbean Producers Jamaica Limited, Jamaica Money Market Brokers, Hi-Lo Food Stores with the Ministry of Health as title sponsors.

It's the first time in the eight years of the event that the Ministry of Health is being made the title sponsor, a very good development, according to nurse Crooks.

"We are delighted to have the Ministry of Health playing the title sponsor role, as it lends itself to the belief that what we are trying to accomplish through the CUMI Come Run is being taken seriously by the government," said Nurse Crooks.

Running Events, led by Alfred "Franno" Francis will provide time management for the event.

"The event will be chip-timed using our MyLaps BibTag Timing System, with a clock at the finish," Francis explained, adding the system is well regarded across the world at top class race meets.

Award Categories include 5K Run - first, second and third (Male & Female), 5K Walk - Novelty Prizes10K Run - first, second and third (Male & Female). There will also be an award for the largest corporate team.
