Elaine, Asafa shine at Diamond League meet in Zurich

Double Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson and Asafa Powell were the Jamaican winners today in the IAAF Diamond League meet in Zurich.

Thompson turned in an outstanding run to win the women's 200 metres in a Diamond League record 21.85 seconds to turn back the challenge of her Dutch rival Dafne Schippers, who finished second in 21.86 seconds.

American Allyson Felix finished third in 22.02 seconds while Thompson's compatriots Simone Facey was fifth in 22.50 seconds and Veronica Campbell-Brown sixth in 22.51 seconds.  

Meanwhile, Asafa Powell clocked 9.94 seconds to win the 100 metres event.

Second place went to South African Akani Simbine, who continued his impressive season with a 9.99 seconds run ahead of the Ivory Coast’s Ben Youssef Meite, who clocked the same time for third place. 

Olympic 110 hurdles champion Omar McLeod ended sixth in 10.12 seconds. 

In the meantime, Megan Simmonds was sixth in the women's 100 metres hurdles in 12.90 seconds.

The event was won by world record holder Kendra Harrison in 12.63 seconds. 

The first Jamaican on the track was Christania Williams, who clocked the fastest time in the two pre-international programme women’s 100m event, winning her section in 11.04 seconds.
