OCHO RIOS:

Grand BahIA Principe captured the Sandals St. Ann- St Mary Business House Football title after a dramatic 5-4 penalty kicks shoot-out win over National Water Commission last Thursday at Drax Hall Oval.

With the win, Grand Bahia were carving their first-ever, lien on the trophy, after being runners-up on several occasions.

In the third place play-off, Couples Sans Souci clipped 2015 champions Couples Tower Isle 1-0 in the battle of the Couples Resorts.

But it was the grand final that had the large and boisterous crowd enthralled, as both teams played attractive, attacking football, but failed to score at the completion of regulation and extra time.

early action

The match started at a feverish pace, with former champions National Water Commission dictating the early action, thanks to Dwayne Holmes and Ricardo Reid, but they failed to penetrate the iron-clad Grand Bahia defence. The hotel men, however, gradually found their footing and, in the second half, dominated the match and, had it not been for faulty shooting, would have come out comfortable winners.

With extra time failing to separate the teams, the dreaded penalty kicks ensued. Grand Bahia scored their five allotted penalties, but NWC failed on their final kick, much to the joy of the hundreds of Grand Bahia spectators who had crammed into the venue. It was the second consecutive match the team had won on penalty kicks, having defeated Couples Tower Isle by the same route in the semi-finals.

"It was a fitting conclusion to an exciting season, and hats off to the new champions. They have toiled for many years and finally reaped rewards," noted president of the St. Ann Business House Football Association Danny Beckford, who, along with Sandals Resorts public relations manager Crissano Galley, handed over the trophy to the victors.

Ian Spencer, regional public relations manager for Sandals Resorts, hailed the standard of play in the competition and issued hearty congratulations to the Grand Bahia team on a job well done.
