Mid-week triple for Nelson
EDMONTON, Canada (CM):
Jamaican Dane Nelson reeled off an impressive triple at Northland Park on Wednesday to climb back into second place in the jockeys standings.
Riding on the seven-race, mid-week card, the three-time former Jamaica champion rider logged victories in race two with favorite Misty Do It and in race three with 5-1 chance Wine Stock before wrapping up with success in race seven aboard 3-1 chance On a Quest.
With the haul, Nelson overtook Trinidadian Keishan Balgobin to reclaim second spot in the standings with 48 wins. Balgobin is one behind in third, with multiple-time former Northland champion Quincy Welch lying fourth on 44 wins.
Five-time defending champion Rico Walcott tops the standings with 86 wins in the season which signs off on October 22.
Nelson opened his account in a six-furlong trip when he made all the running with brown filly Misty Do It to trounce the two-year-olds by four lengths.
In race three over 1300 metres, Nelson produced another gate-to-wire effort with Wine Stock to dispose of the three-year-old and upwards by five lengths. He and the six-year-old bay gelding duelled with Bear's Reality through the quarter before getting clear entering the stretch and dominating the run through the lane.
ON A QUEST
Nelson completed his triple by guiding four-year-old chestnut gelding On a Quest to a narrow win over the three-year-old and upwards in a six-furlong trip.
The pair stalked pace-setter Artie in the Park, ridden by Walcott, before bidding in the stretch and nipping their rival on a head bob at the wire.
Young Jamaican Shamaree Muir was also successful on the day's card, winning race five over six furlongs with 3-1 bet Smileagainpana.
