Frome, Rusea's in 0-0 draw
Rusea's High remain in control of Zone B in the 2016 ISSA-FLOW daCosta Cup, although they were held to a scoreless draw by rival Frome Technical yesterday in Lucea, Hanover, on a day when several scheduled matches were not played.
With the island under threat from Hurricane Matthew, the teams, it appeared, seemed distracted. Both looked listless especially in front of goal in a game that lacked quality, and although each had their moments, the outcome was inevitable, leaving both coaches unimpressed.
Aaron Lawrence, coach of the ten-time title winners Rusea's, told the Sunday Gleaner that he thought the game was scrappy and that his players lacked focus.
"It was a scrappy game from both teams today. I really can't say why this was so, but we never sparked at all," said the former national goalkeeper.
"It was just a case of us not having the fire today, and it showed. We missed many chances to score, but we still earned a point and we will just have to be satisfied with the result as we are still leading the zone," Lawrence said.
Indeed, Rusea's lead Zone B on 11 points, three more than second-place Frome, while Green Island High are holding on to third spot.
Rusea's were unlucky not to score in the 18th minute, when forward Sachin Wilmot saw his shot missing the target. Then Okean Johnson also came close with his effort saved on the rebound by Owayne Ricketts, the Frome custodian.
Keith Blake missed an easy opportunity for Frome in the 33rd minute. He was played through and he took his shot a little too early and saw it zip narrowly past the upright.
Both teams came even closer in the second half. Frome, through substitute Ajani Campbell, who struck the crossbar with the Rusea's goalkeeper stranded, and Jhevoy Diaz's shot struck the upright.
"We wanted to come here and leave with at least a point, so the result isn't a bad one for us," said the Frome coach Marvin Quarry.
He said it was a fair result seeing that neither team was able to take advantage of their chances.
"The focus now is on Green Island, where, if we win or secure a draw, we would be practically set for the next round," added Quarry.
