Glenmuir High School's 19-year-old daCosta Cup team football captain, Jevaughn Ennis, has his teammates eyeing the big prize. For him, the target is more goals.

The centre forward currently leads the race for the 2016 Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)-FLOW daCosta Cup Golden Boot award - the title that goes to the leading scorer at the end of the season. He has so far netted 19 goals.

Those strikes include three separate hat-tricks and a five-goal onslaught against Foga Road High in an earlier Zone M fixture.

Ennis told The Gleaner that his lethal form is due to understanding the simple nuances of the game, which works better when his teammates understand their role in the system.

Having gained rich experience as part of previous Glenmuir High teams over the past five years, Ennis is one of the first names on the team list.

The modest player said that while he would continue scoring goals, it will never be for personal gratification, but for the betterment of his team.

"I never set personal targets like the number of goals I want to score in a year, because I am scoring them for my school. That is the important thing. As long as the team does well, I am happy," said Ennis.

Ennis has scored 19 of his team's 33 goals in 10 matches so far, and with the inter-zone round about to get under way, his ambition is to continue his rich vein of form to take his team as far as possible in the competition.

"As captain, I have to lead from the front, literally, and that means staying calm and collected and focused to get my job done well. So if that means scoring another 19 goals, then that is what I want to do," he reasoned.

"I believe we have what it takes to do well this year. My pace and skill make me a dangerous player for defenders. I hope to keep scoring," said Ennis, whose school advanced to the inter-zone round in second place in the zone behind Garvey Maceo.
