Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has been banned from driving for 18 months after admitting to drunk driving, despite saying he hadn't "intentionally consumed alcohol".

Toure, who was arrested in east London on November 28, appeared in court on Monday. He was also fined US$70,000.

The 33-year-old Toure is a Muslim and said yesterday in a statement on his Facebook page that he has "always refused alcohol".

The former Ivory Coast international said, "As I was above the permitted limit when tested on the night, I decided not to challenge the charge. However, it was important to me that I told the court that I had not intentionally consumed alcohol."

Toure added that "The judge in his sentencing remarks accepted that I had not been intentionally drinking."
