Russell's black bat banned

Cricket Australia (CA) has taken a u-turn in allowing all-rounder Andre Russell to use a black bat in this year’s edition of the Big Bash League following complaints lodged by umpires on Tuesday.

The Sydney Thunder all-rounder had sparked debate when he stepped to the crease against the Sydney Sixers with the pink and black implement, with some immediately questioning its legality.

Critics had deemed Russell’s use of the bat to be flouting the rules of the game, pointing to Law 6.6 which states that it is illegal for a player to have a blackened blade.

A Cricket Australia official had quickly pointed out, however, that any decision on the matter was within the purview of the governing body.

Following complaints lodged by the officials, however, the body has banned the player from using the bat, due to the fact that it left marks on the ball.
