Pinelope to atone

Jockey Shane Ellis pushes PINELOPE to victory in the MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT (NB 3-Y-O) race at Caymanas Park on Saturday, February 13, 2016.

Midweek racing continues at Caymanas Park today with a nine-race programme featuring a knotty open allowance race over 1200 metres to be contested by eight starters, including the recent winners GARY GLITTER and BLUE DIXIE.

Also on the card is the annual renewal of the $350,000-$300,000 claiming race over 1100 metres for the Millard Ziadie Memorial Cup in which 11 will face the starter. Top contenders are the down in class pair of DIFERENTGENERATION and FORTUNEONEHUNDRED, along with SHADE OF BEAUTY.

But the race of the day is definitely the three-year-old and up open-allowance sprint which not only features GARY GLITTER and BLUE DIXIE, but the talented filly PINELOPE, DREAMCOMETRUE, POLLY B, PROLIFIC PRINCESS and SIR BUDGET.

Speed is strongly represented by POLLY B and SIR BUDGET, both of whom will ensure a cracking pace into the straight. Others expected to race prominently are GARY GLITTER, PINELOPE and PROLIFIC PRINCESS.

TOO SHARP

I suspect that the speed of SIR BUDGET and POLLY B should set up the race for the likes of GARY GLITTER, PINELOPE or BLUE DIXIE, who though scoring over a mile in the Alex Hamilton Trophy on January 28, beating the then favourite PINELOPE into third place, will not find the trip too sharp.

The Dalton Sirjue-trained four-year-old colt GARY GLITTER has progressed along the right lines in recent months and was most impressive when scoring over this trip in overnight company recently. He could well start favourite on the strength of that performance and could win again. Strictly at the weights, however, the Patrick Fong-trained PINELOPE looks tempting with a mere 48.5kg and in-form apprentice Dane Dawkins in the saddle.

Backed as if defeat was out of the question when finishing 21/2 lengths third to BLUE DIXIE over a mile on last, PINELOPE chased the leader SIR BUDGET, and although taking over on entering the straight, gave way to BLUE DIXIE on the rails a furlong out, but enjoys a 8.5kg swing with her old rival today and should stave off GARY GLITTER, who is allowing her 5.5kg.

Other firm fancies on the card are MONEY MAGNET in the first race for three-year-olds, PROUD PRESIDENT (Dane Nelson up) ahead of BOUNCE in the sixth, along with the Steven Todd-trained DIFERENTGENERATION in the eighth and SURE STEP in the closing four-year-old and up maiden race over the straight, both with Nelson aboard.
