DaCosta, Walker steal the show
Champion trainer Wayne DaCosta and champion jockey Omar Walker teamed up for three winners at Caymanas Park yesterday, including 9-5 favourite LOTTERY TICKET in the Howard Phillipps Memorial Trophy over 1100 metres, the day's feature.
The fair-size crowd, which included former West Indies fast-bowling great Michael Holding and former England cricket captain Michael Atherton, saw the DaCosta-trained 1-9 favourite, RADICAL, and 3-5 favourite LOOSE CANNON also providing Walker with runaway wins.
LOTTERY TICKET, however, had no such luxury, as the four-year-old filly by Seeking The Glory out of Just A Flutter had to be hard driven to catch and beat the free-runnng ZEPHYR (12-1) by half a length in the good time of 1:06.2. The race was contested by 11 starters, including the fleet-footed LUNAR ROCKET (5-2), who disputed the lead with ZEPHYR into the straight, but weakened out of the frame in the latter stages.
MARLENE MY LOVE
Meanwhile, the lightly-raced but highly thought of three-year-old filly, MARLENE MY LOVE, notched her second win from as many starts in the restricted allowance mile contested by eight three-year-olds.
Ridden by former champion jockey Wesley Henry for trainer Dwight Chen and popular owner Howard Hamilton, MARLENE MY LOVE (named for the owner's wife) tracked long-time leader WESTERN WARRIOR (19-1) into the straight before going by a furlong out to beat him by 31/2 lengths in the good time of 1:39.3.
Unraced as a two-year-old, the bay filly by Adore The Gold out of Miss Chestnut, a half sister to two-time Horse of the Year Mark My Word, showed enough class to prompt her owner to say: "I believe she will develop into a live classic contender ... . She has the pedigree and a style of running conducive to middle and longer distances."
MARLENE BY LOVE was bred by HAM Stables Limited.
