NCB pumps $3m into Intercol Champs
THIS year's Intercollegiate Track and Field Championships, which is scheduled for Friday, April 7, and Saturday April 8, was yesterday launched with the National Commercial Bank (NCB) continuing as major supporters with a $3 million sponsorship.
The championship, which will be held inside the National Stadium will also see the top male and female performers each receiving $100,000 with Gregory Peart, sales manager of Payment Services at NCB, making the wire transfer yesterday to the Jamaica Intercollegiate Sports Association during the press briefing.
Christopher Vendryes, sales manager of NCB Insurance Company, lauded Intercol and stated that his firm had no hesitation in again supporting the championships as he saw this as a good transition for those students leaving high school.
Intercol president Dalton Myers, who thanked the various sponsors, stated that he was pleased with what has been happening over the past two years, which coincides with Quality Logistics Event Management joining up with association to execute the meet.
"We are indeed pleased with the progress made at this level as Intercol is about developing student athletes, and it helped to develop at both the amateur and professional levels," said Myers. "We have had some outstanding athletes who have performed at these championships over the years and we will use the meet to select a squad in preparation for the World University Games, which will be held in Chinese Taipei between August 19-30."
Manager of Quality Logistics Event Management, Paul Francis, who is also the coach at the University of Technology, gave an overview of the championships where some 15 teams, including defending male and female champions, G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sports.
"Once again, we expect another high-quality meet as there will be some 36 track and field events, and I can't wait to see the women's 400m and based on form so far this season we could see some eight finalists under 53 seconds and this could become one of the closest ever championships, especially among the females where we could see at least three teams going down to the wire," Francis said.
He also spoke about a new feature as this year the party stand, where students partied just outside the stadium will instead be inside the venue.
Other sponsors of the meet include Gatorade, Island Grill, Pure National Ice, SportsMax, and Puma, which has come on board for the first time and will be in charge of outfitting the officials.
