Aldwyn Sappleton's 20 year-old 800 metres Class Two boys record at the annual ISSA-GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Championships, went up in smoke on yesterday's opening day.

Running like a scared hare, Calabar High's Kimar Farquharson clocked 1.51.26 to lower the former Edwin Allen High and Munro College middle distance star's record (1.52.27) by more than a second.

The Calabar ace had already set the stage for his record breaking performance from earlier in the season, after going below the Champs record with a 1.52.04 clocking at the Carifta Trials.

Farquharson's intentions were clear from the start as he blazed through the first 400m in under 54 seconds and never looked back.

"I just wanted to set it (record) with a good time.. In the final I will see if I can put it at 1.40 something. But I just wanted to get it (record) out of the way (in the heats), because Friday and Saturday are the big days," he added.
