Failures for Gayle, Brathwaite as Delhi lose opener
BANGALORE, India (CMC):
Both superstars Chris Gayle and Carlos Brathwaite failed to fire as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) handed Delhi Daredevils a 15-run defeat in their opening game of the new Indian Premier League season here yesterday.
Playing at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, the left-handed Gayle never got going and made only six, as RCB rallied to 157 for eight off their 20 overs after opting to bat.
He perished in the fourth over, slicing a full toss from seamer Chris Morris at mid-off.
However, Kedar Jadhav top-scored with 69 from 37 balls with five fours and five sixes while captain Shane Watson got 24, to push the hosts up to a competitive total.
Brathwaite's medium pace proved expensive as he conceded 29 runs from his two overs without taking a wicket.
In reply, Delhi never really made a fist of it and ended on 142 for nine, with Rishabh Pant top-scoring with 57 from 36 deliveries with three fours and four sixes.
Brathwaite once again failed to deliver, bowled for one, missing a heave at leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal in the 15th over, with Delhi needing a mere 45 runs from 31 deliveries.
