JAAA National Championships: Spotlight on women's, men's 100m finals

Published:Friday | June 23, 2017 | 6:05 PMRaymond Graham

The men's and women's 100 metres finals will highlight today's second day of the JAAA National Senior Championships at the National Stadium.
The women's final is set for 9 p.m. with the men's to be run off 15 minutes later. Olympic champion Elaine Thompson is the overwhelming favourite for the women's event while 2011 World champion Yohan Blake should take the men's title ahead of former world record holder Asafa Powell.
Competition will get under way at 5 p.m with the men's pole vault final. Two other field event finals will be contested today. The women's discus final is on at 5:30 p.m and the women's long jump final at 7 p.m.
The women's discus should attract a lot of attention. Jamaica will look to send three athletes to the World Championships in the event like they did a year ago at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. NCAA Division 1 champion Shadae Lawrence with a season's best of 62.59 metres will lead the way here and will get great competition from Kellion Knibb, Tarasue Barnett and Daniel Thomas.
Track action will kick off at 5:30 p.m with first round of the women's 400 metres where Olympic bronze medallist Shericka Jackson and NCAA Division 1 Outdoor champion Chris Ann Gordon are the top contenders.
