Caribbean Region TT Federation Mini and Pre-Cadet Champs ends today
The Caribbean Region Table Tennis Federation Mini and Pre-Cadet Championships come to a climax today inside Kingston's National Arena. Play starts at 9 a.m. with titles at stake in singles and doubles in Under-11 and 13 categories.
In a hot Friday afternoon session of singles play, Jamaica's Matthew Fung created a mild upset by edging past Guyanese prospect Colin Wong 3-2 in the Under-11 boys singles. That win put him in the quarterfinals where he fought hard but was eliminated by busy Dominican Republic left-hander Ramon Vila 3-1.
Vila will play teammate Yoel Mendoza in the semi-finals. The title is certain to go to the Dominican Republic as Eduardo Darley faces another teammate Jose Cabral in the other semi. Cabral survived a tough quarter final against Guyana's Jonathan van Lange.
The Under-11 girls field is led by Jamaica's Liana Campbell, while the Under-13 girls section will be hotly contested. After placing first and second in the Under- 11 category last year, Kerr's teammate Priyanka Khellawah and Jamaica's Kelsey Davidson are among the contenders in the girls' Under-13 singles. The Jamaican defeated Khellawan to spark a gold medal team success for her team on Tuesday but that match ended at 12-10 in the fifth set. Furthermore, Davidson lost to Dileisy Acevado of the Dominican Republic and compatriot Janiel Blake in team competition.
The finals are expected to start at approximately 3 p.m.
