Denbigh, Holmwood for rural senior final
Denbigh High will square off against Holmwood Technical in the rural senior final of the ISSA schoolgirls netball competition.
Defending champions Denbigh eased past Anchovy High 45-32 while Holmwood turned back Manchester High 50-37 in the semi-finals played at G.C. Foster College yesterday.
The Christine Bartley-coached Denbigh scored a good win in the end despite a slow start. They led 13-12 after the first quarter but stepped up the pace for the remainder of the game, as they led 25-17 and 37-25 after the second and third quarters. Goal shooter Denay Thomas top scored for Denbigh with 34 from 36 attempts.
Bartley was pleased with her team's display.
"We started out slowly but the girls picked up throughout for a good win and we are happy to be in the final. We are looking forward to meeting Holmwood who have a good record in this competition," said Bartley, who added that the Denbigh netball programme is in good hands after seeing her junior team advance earlier.
In the other senior semi-final, Holmwood completely dominated their rivals as they jumped into a quick 13-6 lead after the first stanza. Goal attack Shadian Bartley was very impressive as she scored 45 goals from 54 attempts while Manchester's Jadalee Johnson had 25 from 31.
" I am not surprised by our easy win as we have watched Manchester all season and we knew about their style of play so our girls came into the game very confident," said Holmwood's coach Carlene Graham Powell.
Earlier Denbigh's junior team outlasted May Day 33-28 to book a berth in the final against Manchester High.
Manchester whipped Glenmuir High 26-18 in the other semi-final.
