Defending senior champions Excelsior High retained their title at last Friday's ISSA Urban Schools Netball Finals at the National Indoor Sports Centre.

The Christopher Smart-coached team, in a repeat of last year's final, got the better of Gaynstead High 37-28.

New champions were crowned among the juniors as St Catherine High stunned defending champions Gaynstead 31-30 in their final.

Goal attack Hasana Williams and goal shooter Rocoya Douglas were the stars for Excelsior in the senior final. Williams got 18 goals from 27, attempts with Douglas assisting well with 10 from 14. For the losers, goal shooter Amanda Pinkney had 17 from 24, while goal attack Astia Brooks ended with 11 from 16.

"All along I said that Gaynstead were playing weaker teams, and that's the reason they had looked that good all season, and we knew that we had the measure of them and we were not scared of them," said an elated Smart after the game.

SURPRISE WIN

In the junior final, goal shooter Talice Redwood scored 22 goals from 30 attempts, while goal attack Chevelee Thompson chipped in with nine from 22 to lead St Catherine to their surprise win.

Gaynstead's Britany Logan had 19 from 27, and goal attack Kelsey Jonas was on target with nine from 22.

Winning coach Phyllis Thompson stated that she was always confident that her team could emerge winners.

"I have watched them (Gaynstead) all season and had a game plan for them, and I am not surprised that we won. This win means a lot for the school and the netball programme as it will definitely garner more support," said Thompson, who added that she was looking forward to the clash with Denbigh High in the all-island finals on Wednesday.
