I will regret missing World Cup for the rest of my life - Buffon
Legendary Italian goalkeeper Gigi Buffon says will regret his country's World Cup qualification blunder for the rest of his life after the Azzurri failed to book a spot in Russia next year.
Buffon was set to become the first man ever to participate in six editions of the World Cup, but the Azzurri lost in the play-off to Sweden.
“I will regret Italy missing the World Cup for the rest of my life,” said the 39-year-old Juventus goalkeeper in an interview with German magazine Der Spiegel.
“We took away that joy for children, that rapid heartbeat you get from watching your country play in an event like that.”
Buffon added that he had not paid too much attention to him missing out on the appearance record and is instead seeing the bigger picture.
“I see myself as a soldier at the service of my team and my country.”
Buffon will celebrate his 40th birthday in January and has previously hinted he’ll retire at the end of the season, but may well reconsider.
“I will probably quit then, but will always be at the disposal of Juventus and the Nazionale.”
