Crocs to get RSPL boost
The Jamaica Rugby Football Union (JRFU) will be putting on an exhibition sevens match during half-time of Monday evening's Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) game between Arnett Gardens FC and FC Reno at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
With the RSPL football match set to kick off at 8:35 p.m., the rugby match is expected to start at around 9:20 p.m. and will feature members of the Jamaica Crocs team opposing each other.
With a busy schedule for its Crocs and Lady Crocs teams this year, the JRFU is looking to give its players as much valuable playing time as possible, and increase the profile and awareness of the team to the public.
JRFU Chairman Jerry Benzwick said that this is an innovative idea, which he thanks the Jamaica Football Federation and the Premier League Clubs Association (PLCA) for facilitating and getting involved with.
"It looks so far, based on the time which is allowed, that we will be playing seven minutes, the full half of a sevens rugby match.
"The JFF and the PLCA have been kind enough to allow us a little bit of exposure, television time and publicity, so putting on an exhibition game, we hope, will garner some support, give us a little bit of traction and get the sport some attention that it needs. That's basically it - grow the sport, show the wider public, let them see how fun and exciting it is. That's what we hope to achieve. If at least 10 people can see it and love it, then we have achieved our goal," said Benzwick.
This year, the Jamaica Crocs will take part in the Rugby World Cup Sevens, the Hong Kong Sevens tournament, the Central American and Caribbean Sports Organisation (CASCO) Games, and the Commonwealth Games.
Their female counterparts, the Lady Crocs, will also feature in the CASCO Games.
